The Goldsmith

Josh Pumper founded Scarce Metals. Before launching his own business, he worked at MakeShift Accessories creating jewelry from salvaged and repurposed artifacts. Through attending various artist workshops, Josh discovered his passion in ancient craftsmanship and continues to refine his skills under his mentor Keith Berge. Scarce was created with the intention to honor and preserve the masterful craftsmanship and timeless beauty of jewelry found from ancient Mycenaean, Sumerian, and Roman civilizations that modern means of mass production fail to replicate. To capture these alluring aesthetics, Josh works with high karat metals and frequently incorporates natural stones to celebrate the elements of our earth.Raised in a military family, Josh spent his childhood around the world which fostered a deep curiosity that continues to inspire his creative spirit. He was born in England, spent his early childhood in Arkansas before moving to Guam, until his family settled onto his maternal family's farm in rural Minnesota. Throughout his adolescence, Josh fixed tractors, plowed the fields, remodeled the family farmhouse and worked on cars. As he grew into adulthood he devoted most of his time to auto mechanics and pursuing art. With a love to draw and create, Josh always knew he wanted a career making something. At Makeshift Accessories he began transforming reclaimed materials with historical and cultural significance into striking designs. Over time, his passion grew to encompass ancient craftsmanship and fine jewelry. In order to hone his craft, he has attended the Haystack Mountain School of Crafts and the North House Folk School. Driven by a love of fine jewelry and inspired by ancient artistry, Josh found his passion in goldsmithing.
